หม่าโจ้ว (媽祖) คือเทพนารีแห่งท้องทะเลที่ชาวจีนชายฝั่งนับถือในฐานะผู้คุ้มครองชาวเรือและนักเดินทางให้รอดพ้นภยันตราย ในอดีตการเดินทางทางเรือเต็มไปด้วยอันตราย ผู้คนจึงไหว้ขอพรท่านเป็นที่พึ่งทางใจก่อนออกเดินทาง ในไทยมักเรียกท่านว่า 'เจ้าแม่ทับทิม' ความศรัทธาเดินทางมากับชาวจีนโพ้นทะเลแต้จิ๋ว ฮกเกี้ยน และไหหลำ มีศาลเจ้าแม่ทับทิมทั่วประเทศ เช่น ศาลเจ้าแม่ทับทิมสะพานเหลืองในกรุงเทพฯ Mazu (媽祖) is the sea goddess venerated by coastal Chinese communities as the protector of sailors and travellers from harm. Sea voyages were once perilous, so people prayed to her for safe passage before setting out. In Thailand she is widely known as 'Jao Mae Tubtim'. The devotion arrived with the Teochew, Hokkien, and Hainanese diaspora; her shrines stand nationwide, including the Jao Mae Tubtim shrine at Saphan Lueang in Bangkok.

- ข้อห้ามตามมารยาทการไหว้ในศาลเจ้า ควรไหว้ฟ้าดิน (ทีกง) ด้านหน้าศาลให้เรียบร้อยก่อน แล้วจึงไหว้องค์เจ้าแม่ด้านใน Per shrine etiquette, honour Heaven and Earth (Ti Gong) at the front of the shrine before paying respects to Mazu inside

- ในไทยคำว่า 'เจ้าแม่ทับทิม' บางครั้งหมายถึงเทพนารีจุ้ยบ้วยเนี้ย (水尾聖娘) ของชาวไหหลำซึ่งถือเป็นคนละองค์กับหม่าโจ้ว แต่ทั้งสองล้วนเป็นเทพีแห่งการเดินเรือที่ผู้คนนับถือร่วมกัน In Thailand 'Jao Mae Tubtim' sometimes refers to the Hainanese goddess Shui Wei Sheng Niang (水尾聖娘), considered distinct from Mazu — yet both are sea-protector goddesses venerated side by side.
